It's the kind of rumor that has come up enough that there has to be legitimacy to it, even if at first glance, it doesn't seem perfectly obvious.
The Boston Red Sox don't necessarily need a first baseman, assuming Triston Casas returns to health, or a DH. Those are the roles free agent Pete Alonso would fill.
And in yet another speculation by a plugged-in MLB writer, Alonso has been linked to the Red Sox.

This time it's from MLB.com's Mark Feinsand, who attempted to make a match for one free agent with each of the 30 teams.
For the Red Sox, he chose Alonso, who has only ever played for the New York Mets and is that franchise's all-time home runs leader.
"First base was an issue for the Red Sox, who may not be sold on Triston Casas as the future at the position," Feinsand writes. "Boston wants to add an impact bat, and few players on this year’s market can have the impact of Alonso, who slugged 38 homers with 126 RBIs and an.871 OPS last season."

Alonso was playing the 2025 season on what was essentially a one-year contract after a relatively down 2024. But he showed his bat still has thump in it.
He's not a good defender, even at the low positional value defensive position of first base, which may track him to end up as a DH long term.
That forces teams considering Alonso to evaluate how they think his bat will age, because essentially all of his value going forward will depend on how well he hits.
Someone is going to pay Alonso to be in the heart of their order, and it certainly seems like it could be the Red Sox.
