Red Sox rookie Payton Tolle receives promising news about role with team after amazing debut against Pirates image

The Boston Red Sox’s newest rookie in Payton Tolle put on an amazing performance in his debut yesterday, terrorizing the Pittsburgh Pirates’ lineup for 5.1 innings. Because of that, it looks like he has a spot with the team.

According to Sox CBO Craig Breslow, Tolle will take the empty spot in the rotation left by Walker Buehler, who was cut yesterday by Boston. Tolle will take the fourth spot, and Dustin May will shift to the fifth.

This move was done particularly due to the fact Richard Fitts, who has been the first man to take the fifth spot during an injury, getting injured himself. Now, Breslow is confident in the pitching depth they have, even with injuries.

“I think there’s a lot of creative ways that we can handle getting outs and innings, whether that’s traditional starters, whether that’s being a little bit creative. We feel really good about just the overall talent of pitching that we have in the upper levels,” Breslow stated (via Alex Speier).

The Sox still have another top guy in the minors in Kyle Harrison, the main piece from the San Francisco Giants from the Rafael Devers trade. However, Tolle’s debut has proven they probably won’t need him until they expand the rosters.

Overall, Tolle has shown he’s ready for the big leagues, and his stuff can dominate hitters. Hopefully he keeps it up, and the Sox get a fourth amazing starter.
