The Boston Red Sox’ rookie sensation Roman Anthony is having a great first year in the MLB, as he is one of the top rookies in the American League, and MLB as a whole. Anthony getting Rookie of the Year might be hard due to competition, but not out of the picture.
Bleacher Report’s Kerry Miller is actually a believer in Anthony, and gave a bold prediction that Anthony could win ROY.
Six months ago, this would not have been a bold prediction in the slightest…The Red Sox were three games below .500 when he made his debut, but they've gone 42-25 since then, good for the best winning percentage among teams not named the Milwaukee Brewers. If Anthony continues to thrive and they manage to overtake Toronto to win the AL East, got to like his chances for ROY,” Miller wrote.
Since July 4th, Anthony has been arguably the best offensive player on the team. He’s slashing .323/.431/.518 with six home runs. Miller noted however that his competition, Athletics’ Nick Kurtz, may be insurmountable.
“And at this point, Kurtz is a near-foregone conclusion to win it. When Yordan Alvarez won unanimously in 2019, he triple-slashed .313/.412/.655 with 27 home runs in 87 games played. Well, in Kurtz's first 87 games in the majors, he triple-slashed .315/.404/.650 with 26 home runs—and should end up playing around 120 games by season's end. He is listed at -10000, per Vegas Insider, with Anthony at +1800 as the only player left with a remotely realistic shot at catching him,” Miller stated.
So, while it could be hard, Anthony does have a shot. If he does what Miller says, and helps the Sox conquer the Blue Jays, winning ROY shouldn’t be outside of his reach.
