Red Sox reveal upsetting update regarding pursuit of All-Star Ketel Marte due to Willson Contreras deal image

The Boston Red Sox finally made a contending move this offseason by trading for Willson Contreras. However, to the ire of fans, they seem like they are stopping short of doing more.

According to Bob Nightengale, since the Sox got Contreras, they have ended talks with the Arizona Diamondbacks for Ketel Marte.

This is a huge blow for the Sox and fans. This offseason, they’ve lost or dealt 16 players, with the intention of only bringing one back, that player being Alex Bregman. They’ve traded for five players, and haven’t spent a DIME in free agency.

With that in mind, they should be focusing all their effort on re-signing Bregman. Given the fact that they are the fourth-wealthiest club in baseball, and the fact that they’ve spent no money this offseason, they definitely could afford him.

They could also sign some key relievers, as that is the position they lost the most of. Or, they could get the No. 2 pitcher they’ve been looking for in free agency; someone like Ranger Suarez, or go cheaper and take a chance on someone like Tatsuya Imai.

Overall, the Sox have money. They have space. They can make big signings, and they just don’t do it. Hopefully, they remember what it means to be one of the biggest clubs in baseball and start acting like it.
