Red Sox reportedly heavily interested in trading for $5.75 million All-Star, Gold Glove to finally fill Dustin Pedroia-sized infield hole image

The Boston Red Sox' moves this offseason have all been trades, and their most common partner is their old GM, Chaim Bloom, and his new team, the St. Louis Cardinals. They’ve made two trades with them so far, and now, it seems a third could be coming.

According to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal, the Sox are heavily interested in Cardinals All-Star and Gold Glove Brendan Donovan. He would slot in at second base, a position the Sox haven’t been able to fill long-term since the days of Dustin Pedroia.

“St. Louis Cardinals president of baseball operations Chaim Bloom, who already has traded right-hander Sonny Gray and first baseman Willson Contreras to the Boston Red Sox, might not be done dealing with his former club. The Cardinals and Red Sox also have discussed a trade that would send infielder/outfielder Brendan Donovan to Boston, according to people briefed on the conversations. Donovan likely would play second base for the Red Sox, who have also been linked to the Arizona Diamondbacks’ Ketel Marte. No deal is close, but Donovan almost certainly would bring a greater return than Gray or Contreras, whom the Cardinals acquired for five minor-league pitchers while including a combined $28 million in the deals,” Rosenthal wrote.

This past season, Donovan slashed.287/.353/.422/.775 with 32 doubles, 10 home runs, and 50 RBI in 118 games played. He would definitely be the defensive upgrade the Sox need in the infield, and he provides constant offense as well, which works well for the Sox’ offense that stalled out in the playoffs.

If the Sox were to get Donovan, it would fill a hole that’s been there for almost a decade. It would also give the Sox two Gold Gloves in their infield, and a possible third if they re-sign Alex Bregman.

Hopefully, some headway is made towards a trade, as this could be something the Sox would really benefit from.
