The Boston Red Sox signed Walker Buehler with the idea that he could be a top pitcher in their rotation, being the number two to Garrett Crochet’s one. However, it just didn’t work out.

According to MLB insider Jeff Passan, the Sox have released Walker Buehler. While he gave no reason, it’s quite obviously due to Buehler’s horrendous performance on the Sox.

This season, Buehler had a 5.45 ERA in 23 games, pitching 112 innings and getting 84 strikeouts. He also had a high WHIP of 1.558, had an HR/9 of almost two, and had a record of only 7-7.

The Sox signed Buehler this season on a one-year, $21.05 million contract with a mutual option for a second year. The Sox really hoped Buehler would come and be their second starter, but he just couldn’t perform.

The Sox should have known the risk taking Buehler, however. He was coming off his second Tommy John surgery, and he wasn’t that good with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2024. He was a workhorse in the playoffs, and the Sox were banking on that fact and hoped he would have the same production with them.

Buehler was demoted to the bullpen, where he played one final game with the Sox, and gave up a two-run homer in his only appearance. That was probably the final nail in the coffin for him.

The Sox now have called up their top pitching prospect in Payton Tolle, with the hope he will be much better than Buehler. While he wasn’t great, the Sox fandom still respects Buehler, and wishes him good luck.
