The Boston Red Sox signed Alex Bregman last offseason, but the deal included opt-outs. After the conclusion of the 2025 season, it became clear that Bregman would hit the free-agent market after just one season in Boston.
“Alex Bregman plans to opt out of his contract with the Boston Red Sox, a source told ESPN on Tuesday night, confirming a New York Post report. The move was expected and doesn't rule out the veteran third baseman returning to Boston, but for now, he will be part of the free agent class for a second straight offseason,” ESPN reported.
The Red Sox are optimistic about their chances of bringing Bregman back, but the Philadelphia Phillies could also be in the mix.
“If the Phillies were to move Bohm, in my judgment, it would have to be because they think there's a chance of getting a Bregman or they're one of the teams potentially that could look at a Bo Bichette at a spot that's not shortstop," MLB insider Jon Morosi said. "There's different ways they could augment their club, but you would have to have a clear upgrade on Bohm if you're gonna go ahead and make that trade."
Sports Illustrated’s Will Laws believes the Red Sox will ultimately get the job done and re-sign Bregman.
“Bregman opted out of his contract just one year into his three-year, $120 million deal in Boston. A quad injury cost him about a month-and-a-half in the middle of the year, but he was otherwise productive at the plate after a relatively down 2024 campaign. Bregman’s approach is sound, with minimal swing-and-miss and a good command of the strike zone, and his defense remains at least solid at the hot corner, so it seems likely he’ll get four- or five-year offers from teams this time around. Bregman assumed a leadership role last year with the Red Sox, who appear motivated to sign a star infielder,” Laws wrote.
The Red Sox would love to have Bregman back, particularly for the experience and leadership he provides. Boston made the playoffs last year and believes it can repeat that success.
Bringing Bregman back would also generate excitement around the city. With Spring Training just a month away, expect the Red Sox to move quickly to work out a deal.
