Everyone knows the Boston Red Sox will be targeting a second ace this offseason to pair with Garrett Crochet. While most think the Sox will trade for Minnesota Twins ace Joe Ryan, another trade could work just as well.
Fansided’s Cody Williams believes the Sox could trade for Cincinnati Reds ace Hunter Greene, a young All-Star with a powerful arm. The trade would look like this:
Boston Red Sox receive: RHP Hunter Greene
Cincinnati Reds receive: OF Jarren Duran, LHP Payton Tolle, OF Jhostnyxon Garcia
The Red Sox have ample pitching depth based on Breslow's dealings over the past few seasons, even with whiffs on players like Walker Buehler and Dustin May. However, what they clearly lacked late in the year, and especially in the postseason, was the top-end talent to put in behind Crochet with any type of confidence in the highest leverage situations. Greene answers that call tenfold. While the health is a concern, he's the type of elite talent that you don't think twice about when it comes to acquiring,” Williams wrote.
This season, Greene posted a 7-4 record, an ERA of 2.76, 132 Ks, and a WHIP of 0.938. He only pitched 107 innings, though, but the Sox found a way to get Crochet to pitch the second-most innings in baseball after coming off Tommy John, so they could find something to make Greene work, too.
Losing Duran would be hard, but it would solve the logjam in the outfield. As long as they know they can keep Greene healthy, this may be the trade of the winter for the Sox.
