The Boston Red Sox had one huge problem in their final month of the season and in the Wild Card series against the New York Yankees: a lack of consistent offense. They used to have it from Rafael Devers, but they traded him away in June to free up cap space, and also just put their clubhouse in a better position.
And surprisingly, it worked. However, they lost the offense of Devers, leading to their downfall. Now, Fansided’s Zachary Rotman believes the Sox will pursue a reunion with a 2021 playoff hero, Kyle Schwarber.
“You can have the opinion that trading Rafael Devers was the right long-term move for the Red Sox to have made, but that deal only makes sense if the Red Sox reinvest the money he was owed and find a way to make up for the offensive impact Devers provided. Signing Schwarber would kill both of those birds with one stone. He might not be the pure hitter Devers is, but I'd say Schwarber has more power, and he gets on base just as much as Devers,” Rotman wrote.
This season, Schwarber finished slashing .240/.365/.563/.928 with 56 homers, 132 RBI, and a WAR of 4.7 in 162 games played. He would definitely fix the Sox’ home run problem, as they were in 15th place this season when it came to hitting the ball out of the park.
However, the only problem with this is that Schwarber’s current team, the Philadelphia Phillies, is likely to use all its resources to retain him. He’s played well in Philly and seen a lot of playoff runs.
Hopefully, the Sox can offer Schwarber a good deal that doesn’t break the bank, and Schwarber, who was a hero in 2021 for the Sox, wants to return and try and win it all in Boston.
