The Boston Red Sox found out the hard way that their lack of star power in the starting rotation would lead to problems when they lost to the New York Yankees in the AL Wild Card. Now, they’ll have to make that a top priority to address this offseason.
However, if they can hold out for one year, they might be able to get a legendary signing. With the Detroit Tigers’ brutal loss to the Seattle Mariners in the ALDS, Fansided’s Wynston Wilcox believes their ace, Tarik Skubal, will want out, and has Boston as one of the top landing spots for him next offseason.
“The Boston Red Sox need to make up for the Walker Buehler mistake from last winter. They brought him in to be the No. 2 behind Garrett Crochet and he was inconsistent and frustrating for much of the season. Adding Skubal would not only help the Red Sox forget about Buehler, but it will also help them avenge an early playoff exit to rival New York Yankees this October,” Wilcox wrote.
This season, Skubal and Sox ace Garrett Crochet were neck and neck for the AL Cy Young for most of the season, until Crochet had a few shoddy starts right at the end. However, Crochet was still the strikeout and innings pitched king.
If the Sox could get two Cy Young-level aces on their team, it would be borderline unfair. Plus, having guys like Brayan Bello and Connelly Early as starters for the foreseeable future just adds fuel to the fire.
Hopefully, the Sox get another good starting pitcher this offseason. However, if they go the rental route once more, and really go after Skubal next offseason, it could be the start of another dynasty in Boston.
