The Boston Red Sox are loving what they’re getting from Roman Anthony, as he’s lived up to the hype from being the No. 1 prospect in baseball. However, Anthony’s time has been cut short, at least for the rest of the regular season.
According to Sox Manager Alex Cora on WEEI Afternoons, Anthony has been placed on the IL with an oblique strain, and will be out for four to six weeks.
This will be a harsh blow for the Red Sox. Anthony has become a core part of the offense, and was their best leadoff hitter in ages. Anthony was just voted Rookie of the Month for August, and was continuing his tear until this injury.
In August, Anthony was slashing .304/.390/.520/.909 with six home runs, and 13 RBI. This season, he’s hitting .292/.396/.463/.859 with eight homers and 32 RBI.
With this news, Nick Sogard has been called up to replace him. He’s hitting .242/.319/.323/.641 in 18 games this year, so he won’t be bringing the production that Anthony did.
The Sox desperately need Wilyer Abreu to return ASAP, as they cannot miss both of their star right fielders at the same time. It just won’t be good for their playoff chances, as both have amazing gloves and strong bats.
Hopefully, Anthony recovers quickly, and is ready at the end of four weeks, so he can make the ALDS if the Sox make it. All the Sox have to do is hold the line, and wait for their young hero to return.
