First baseman Nathaniel Lowe

TL;DR

  • Boston Red Sox designated first baseman Nathaniel Lowe for assignment after playoff elimination.
  • Lowe was acquired late season from Washington Nationals, playing 34 games for Boston.
  • This move signals Red Sox's expectation of Triston Casas's return from injury.
  • Boston has five days to trade Lowe; otherwise, he becomes a free agent for 2026.

The 2025 season did not quite go the way the Boston Red Sox had hoped it would.

A postseason appearance did happen, but Boston was eliminated at the hands of its bitter rival, the New York Yankees. A player that sparked a bit of the Red Sox second half surge has reportedly been designated for assignment.

The official team account on X announced that first baseman/designated hitter Nathaniel Lowe has been designated for assignment. This action follows Boston's acquisition of infielder Tristan Gray from the Tampa Bay Rays.

The Red Sox brought in Lowe late in the season following his release from the Washington Nationals. He played in 34 games for Boston, hitting.280/.370/.420 with 2 home runs, 6 doubles, 16 RBI, and an OPS of.790. In the postseason, he had only seven at-bats, managing just one hit.

Lowe wasn't anticipated to remain with the team long-term, given Boston's expectation of Triston Casas's return from injury. The DFA now indicates the Red Sox anticipate Casas regaining his form and probably won't retain Lowe as a backup.

Boston retains a five-day window to finalize a trade for Lowe. Should no deal materialize, he'll be free to join any new club for the 2026 season.
