Late Saturday night, the Boston Red Sox were dealt some brutal news as free-agent third baseman Alex Bregman signed with the Chicago Cubs on a massive $175 million, five-year deal.

Now, the Red Sox desperately need to find a new infielder to bolster the roster, as Bregman's loss is a huge one for Boston.

Fortunately, other than Bo Bichette, there's one free agent who would make a lot of sense. MLB.com's Mark Feinsand linked the Red Sox to former Arizona Diamondbacks and Seattle Mariners slugger with 325 career homers, Eugenio Suarez.

Red Sox linked to Eugenio Suarez to replace Bregman

"If Boston can't land Bichette," Feinsand writes, "Eugenio Suarez could be a free-agent option at third base."

Suarez might not be the best option this winter, as the 34-year-old slugger isn't the best fielder, nor is he the most consistent hitter.

But, this past season, Suarez hit 49 home runs, had a.228 batting average, put up 3.6 bWAR, and had a 126 OPS+ in one of the best seasons of his long MLB career.

While not to the same degree as his ridiculous 2019 season with the Cincinnati Reds, when he had a.930 OPS and hit 49 homers with 103 RBIs, this past season was a great one.

He had 49 home runs between the Diamondbacks and Mariners, finished with 118 RBIs, an.824 OPS, and reached the 300 home-run mark in his career, closing out his 12th season with 325 home runs.

Suarez would be a short-term rental, but if the Red Sox sign him instead of landing a Bichette-tier player this winter, they could use the rest of the money they would've spent on Bregman on more pitching help this winter.

Losing Bregman to the Cubs is a massive blow for the Red Sox, but there are ways to bounce back from the free-agent disaster.

Suarez, a beloved slugger who's clobbered 325 home runs in his career, could be a fun addition to the heart of the lineup in Boston. He won't cost much, and it makes sense for the Red Sox to go after him this winter.
