The Boston Red Sox just called up their top pitching prospect in Payton Tolle nine days ago, and it seems like he will be here to stay. Now, it looks like the party won’t stop, as another lefty hurler is knocking at the door.
According to Worcester Red Sox reporter Tommy Cassell, Red Sox No. 6 overall prospect Connelly Early was scratched from his start, and it was Boston’s call.
“Chad Tracy on Connelly Early being scratched from his AAA start: ‘(The Red Sox) wanted him not to pitch and they’re probably dealing with stuff up there and they said they just don't want him to (throw). So he's staying available.’ Tracy said nothing was imminent with Early,” Cassell revealed.
This year in AA and AAA, Early has been a menace. He’s posted a 2.60 ERA across both levels, and has a record of 10-3 across 18 starts with 132 Ks in 100 innings pitched.
Early is definitely a prospect the Sox hold dear, as he was inquired about at the trade deadline this year, and due to the Sox not dealing him, they missed out on acquiring Zac Gallen.
While Early will not be postseason eligible this year, calling him up will show Boston if he’s ready to make the jump. Either in the bullpen or as another starter, Early could definitely contribute to the Sox’s final lap towards the playoffs.
