The Boston Red Sox have gotten a true leader in Alex Bregman, and also a major part of their offense and defense. However, with an opt-out in every year of his three-year, $120 million contract, keeping him may be hard.
Although, there are solutions. One solution proposed by Boston Globe’s Peter Abraham would give Bregman a four-year, $150 million extension, with an attractive way to pull Bregman in.

“But maybe there’s a deal to be made. Start with the $80 million over 2026-27 and add two years and $70 million for 2028-29.Make part of a deal a lofty signing bonus to further protect Bregman from the industry unrest that is almost certainly coming after the 2026 season, when the collective bargaining agreement expires,” Abraham wrote. “That gives Bregman $150 million over four years through his age-35 season, plus keeps him with a team that has gravitated toward his leadership and playing for a manager he trusts in Alex Cora.”
Bregman has slashed .278/.360/.477/.837 with 16 homers over 98 games with the Red Sox this season. He did have an injury that put him out for a month, which could make him more likely to take this theoretical deal.
Hopefully the Sox do offer something like this, as whether it’s a coincidence or not, the Sox are going to the playoffs for the first time in four years, and it’s the same year Bregman joins the team.
