Red Sox get positive update regarding ace Michael King's free agency decision image

The Boston Red Sox have been a top suitor for free agent Michael King, as he could slide into the No. 2 position of the starting rotation rather easily, and he’s a New England native.

Now, it seems that the Sox may have the upper hand, if they choose to use it. According to MassLive’s Chris Cotillo, King would love to be in Boston.

“The Red Sox are among a number of teams still involved in talks with righty Michael King, a source confirmed Sunday, though there is no set timeframe for King’s decision. King, who attended Bishop Hendricken High School in Rhode Island and pitched at Boston College, has a crowded market and is sifting through possibilities. According to one source, King would “love to be in Boston” but as always, it’s a matter of terms and dollars lining up,” Cotillo wrote.

This past season, King dealt with injury, but still posted a 5-3 record, an ERA of 3.44, 76 Ks, and a WHIP of 1.200 over 73 innings pitched. If he can fully bounce back to being healthy, he definitely would fit the bill of being a No. 2 pitcher.

However, as Cotillo said, it’s a matter of terms and dollars. The Sox have multiple ways they can approach this; However, the one King will want the most is a full-length deal. And the Sox, who have admitted they don’t believe in giving those out for players in their 30s, are shooting themselves in the foot when they have a star that WANTS to be in Boston.

Hopefully, the Sox realize that they basically have a star pitcher on a platter if they want him, and just give him the contract he wants. That way, they can start focusing solely on getting sluggers for their lineup.
