You read that right. The Boston Red Sox have finally made a move in free agency.
According to the NY Post’s Jon Heyman, the Red Sox have signed All-Star ace Ranger Suarez to a five-year, $130 million deal.
ESPN’s MLB insider Jeff Passan, who just criticized the Red Sox’ lack of talent compared to the rest of the AL East, applauded the signing, writing that the rotation is now excellent.
“The Red Sox's first signing of the winter is a big one -- $130 million for Ranger Suárez -- and gives them a ton of rotation depth with Garrett Crochet, Sonny Gray, Brayan Bello and others. Boston now will turn to adding another bat to its lineup, but that rotation is excellent,” Passan posted.
This past season, Suarez posted a 12-8 record, a 3.20 ERA, 151 Ks, and a WHIP of 1.220 over 157 innings. He’s probably going to slot in at No. 2 in the rotation, followed by Brayan Bello, Sonny Gray, and either Johan Oviedo, Connelly Early, or Kutter Crawford.
This is a great move by the Sox. After having a great rotation last year, they’ve now filled it out, and have an all-around strong rotation that doesn’t rely on its front half, which was its weakness in 2025.
Hopefully, the Sox now go and target a bat to replace Alex Bregman in the order, and finally calm down their irate fans.
