The Boston Red Sox have gotten everything they wanted and more from Roman Anthony, who exploded onto the scene this summer. However, Anthony had to exit the game yesterday due to left oblique tightness, and that could be bad for the Sox.
MassLive’s Chris Cotillo reported the Sox will call up switch-hitting infielder Nick Sogard for Anthony depending on the results of an MRI, which will be getting done today.
“As the Red Sox await Roman Anthony's MRI results, Nick Sogard is the likely choice to replace him on the roster, per multiple sources,” Cotillo tweeted.
Cotillo also released an article with more details on MassLive, stating Anthony may be put on the 10-day IL, in which Sogard would be his replacement for that time as well.
There is a “high probability” Boston will put Anthony on the 10-day IL and recall utility man Nick Sogard from the WooSox before Wednesday’s game against Cleveland, sources told MassLive," Cotillo wrote.
Sogard has played 18 games this year in the majors, and slashed .242/.319/.323/.641. While he’s an ok hitter, he’s not a great replacement for Anthony.

Anthony just won Rookie of the Month for August, where he hit .304 with an OPS of .909, hit six of his eight homers, and got 13 RBI. He’s been an amazing leadoff hitter for the Sox, and has started and finished some great rallies.
Hopefully, Anthony’s injury isn’t too serious, and he won’t be gone that long. If he could be ready by next Friday in the series finale with the Sox’ rival, the New York Yankees, Boston should be fine. However, if it’s longer, the Sox could be in a bad spot. They can miss Anthony or their Gold Glove right fielder Wilyer Abreu, but not both, which they are now.
