The Boston Red Sox have a few goals this offseason for their vision of a championship team; two of them are getting another slugger and a first baseman. Luckily for them, there might be a guy who checks both boxes.
According to MLB insider Bob Nightengale, MLB GMs all see the Sox as the perfect landing spot for New York Mets five-time All-Star Pete Alonso.
“David Stearns, Mets president of baseball operations, was ready to let Alonso walk last year. Alonso had a monster year but they still missed the playoffs, making it easier to walk away now. They are preaching defense or in the words of Stearns, “run prevention," and are expected to let him depart unless he signs a deal they can’t turn down. GMs are predicting the perfect landing spot for Alonso just may be the Red Sox.
This past season, Alonso slashed.272/.347/.524/.871 with 41 doubles, 38 home runs, and 126 RBI in 162 games. Alonso would easily be the best slugger on the Sox, and his numbers would be even better with him having the Green Monster for half the season.
Alonso has also played 162 games in back-to-back seasons, something current Sox first baseman Triston Casas has definitely not done. Casas has only played 92 games over the past two seasons.
So, if the Sox are smart, they’ll end the Casas experiment and go all out on pursuing Alonso. And, if they’re serious about being championship contenders, they’ll re-sign Alex Bregman instead of Alonso just replacing him.
