The Boston Red Sox have been seen as one of the bigger contenders for a first baseman this offseason, but they already have one in Triston Casas. However, it seems it may not be that way for long.
According to the Boston Globe’s Pete Abraham, the Sox may be ready to shop Casas. It seems other teams have started asking around, and believe he will be put on the trade block.
“It felt like the Sox had started to sour on Triston Casas in October when Breslow wouldn’t commit to his being the first baseman next season. Now it’s fair to wonder if he’ll be on the roster come spring training. Other teams have gotten the impression that the Sox would move Casas in a trade…But Casas is projected to receive only $1.7 million via arbitration. That could be enticing for teams looking to add power at a low cost,” Abraham wrote.
This past season, Casas only slashed.182/.277/.303/.580 with three home runs and 11 RBI in 29 games played when he ruptured his patella and ended his season. In fact, Casas has only played a combined 92 games between the 2024 and 2025 seasons.
So, due to his health being a mess, it might hurt his trade stock. However, like Abraham said, his projected $1.7 million salary next year would be favorable.
Hopefully, the Sox land a first baseman replacement before they shop Casas. Even then, they should hold onto him until the next trade deadline to give him some time to prove he’s still a talented rising star.
