The Boston Red Sox have some major moves to make this offseason, but one they thought unattainable may actually be in the picture now.
According to ESPN’s MLB insider Buster Olney, the Detroit Tigers may trade their Cy Young winner, Tarik Skubal, and the Red Sox are one of the best teams to land him.
Other teams believe the Tigers will seriously consider moving him if they can glean what they want in a trade -- and there is every reason to expect a significant bidding war for Skubal, who will be eligible for free agency after next season…The Red Sox are well-positioned to make a run at Skubal, if they want,” Olney wrote.
This season, Skubal posted a 13-6 record, 2.21 ERA, 241 Ks, and a WHIP of 0.891 over 195 innings pitched. He’s also a finalist this season for his second Cy Young, which could make him one of the few back-to-back Cy Youngs in MLB history.
If the Red Sox can get Skubal without breaking the metaphorical bank, they definitely should. Having a 1-2 punch with their own Cy Young candidate and Skubal’s rival, Garrett Crochet, would be borderline unfair to any team opposing them.
The main factor is whether they can re-sign him to a long-term deal. If the Sox can do that, they could have a possible dynasty in the AL, equivalent to the current Los Angeles Dodgers. Hopefully, the Sox can do it and regain their status as the best in the MLB.
