MLB insider notes two things that've happened to Alex Bregman that could make him stay with the Red Sox image

The Boston Red Sox have gotten a lot out of Alex Bregman, who has become a true leader for the team. However, MLB insiders like Jeff Passan have him opting out of his contract and testing free agency.

Passan believes that Bregman would opt-out, but he also noted that would only happen barring two things: an injury or a big slump.

“Because his deal included opt-outs after each of the first two seasons, Bregman could be playing elsewhere in 2026. Barring an injury or catastrophic slump, he will opt out and join Tucker and Schwarber in a clear top tier among this winter's free agents,” Passan wrote

Bregman has faced a somewhat serious injury this year through a quad strain that made him miss almost two months of the season. He’s also going through a slump right now, hitting 5-for-48 since August 1st, and has an OPS of only .693. With both these in mind, Bregman might just take on his option for at least another year, to get a full year of production to use for testing the waters of free agency.

Even if he does this offseason, the Sox have seen what they’ve gotten from overall, both stats and intangibles, and they probably won’t let him go without a fight. Also, Bregman has stated he and his wife love Boston, so they probably have no interest in leaving so soon. If the Sox offer him a good enough deal, he’ll probably accept.

Hopefully either the Sox re-sign him or he opts in, as Bregman has been one of the driving forces in the Sox’ resurgence to power. They need him to continue mentoring the younger players, and to be his All-Star self to keep Boston winning.
