The Boston Red Sox’ calling up of Roman Anthony was probably one of their best in-season moves, as it turned them from their usual mediocre selves into a true playoff contender. However, the way they handled his call up may have consequences.
Fansided’s Zachary Rotman believes the Sox might face some playoff consequences due to having such a late call up.

“Perhaps the Red Sox got the timing perfectly right, but I believe Anthony was ready far earlier than he was called up. He could've helped lead the Red Sox to at least a couple of more wins. Their reluctance to give him a look earlier than they did could end up being what costs them the division or even the top Wild Card spot in the AL,” Rotman wrote.
This season, Anthony is slashing .292/.396/.463/.859 with eight home runs and 32 RBI in 72 games, where has has been an incredible leadoff hitter. However, now Anthony is out with an oblique strain, and the Sox are feeling it.
So like Rotman said, the Sox probably should have called up Anthony a lot sooner. Now, they are a little uneasy about making sure they make the playoffs, and pretty uneasy about having homefield advantage in the Wildcard.
If the Sox had called Anthoyn up earlier, he probably could have given them a real shot at winning the division, and making the Sox a true top contender for the World Series. Hopefully he returns in time for the playoffs, so the Sox can have their fighting chance.
