Pete Alonso contract details: Orioles pry slugger away from Mets with 5-year deal image

A day after losing closer Edwin Diaz to the heavy-spending Los Angeles Dodgers, the New York Mets saw another franchise pillar leave in free agency.

Pete Alonso, the Mets' all-time home run leader, agreed to a deal with the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday, ending a stellar seven-year tenure in Queens. Alonso hit 264 home runs in seven seasons, mashing at least 34 home runs each year with the exception of a pandemic-shortened 2020 campaign.

For the Orioles, it's the culmination of a winter that has seen them take swings at big fish. Baltimore has reportedly targeted frontline starters in trades, made a $150 million offer to Kyle Schwarber and jumped into the Kyle Tucker sweepstakes, but it's Alonso who gives GM Mike Elias an addition he can hang his hat on.

Here's what you need to know about Alonso's deal with the Orioles.

Pete Alonso contract details

The Orioles and Alonso agreed to a five-year, $155 million contract, ESPN's Jeff Passan first reported. The deal does not include any deferrals or opt-outs.

Alonso's deal exceeds the pact Schwarber signed to return to the Philadelphia Phillies by $5 million, and it comes a year after he struggled to draw the multi-year offers he hoped in free agency. After a much better season at the plate, Alonso cashes in on a deal that will lock him in with Baltimore through the 2030 season.

The Mets were reportedly hesitant to offer Alonso more than three years, which made them an unlikely landing spot despite the slugger being New York's all-time leader in home runs. According to the New York Post's Joel Sherman, the Mets never made an offer to Alonso.

Part of Alonso's appeal is his durability, as he has missed only 24 of 1,032 possible games since entering the majors in 2019. While contact hitting, baserunning and defense are all trouble areas at times, Alonso's reliability as a power hitter made him an attractive option for teams this winter.
