Orioles' Zach Eflin sets target date for 2026 return image

The Baltimore Orioles have been one of the most active teams in the 2025 offseason, completing big trades for both Taylor Ward and Shane Baz.

They've also made a big splash in the free-agent market, signing first baseman Pete Alonso to a five-year $155 million deal.

Earlier this week, Baltimore made a low-risk signing, bringing back Zach Eflin on a one-year $10 million deal.

Eflin struggled for the Orioles last season, posting a 5.93 ERA in 14 games before being sidelined for the season due a back injury.

That said, in nine appearances for the O's after being traded from the Rays in 2024, Eflin posted a 5-2 record with a 2.60 ERA.

His strongest and most durable season came the year before in 2023, where he finished sixth in American League Cy Young award voting after posting a 16-8 record with a 3.50 ERA and 186 strikeouts over 177 2/3 innings.

However, due to his lengthy recovery process, it was unsure when in 2026 he'd be able to return.

But, Monday's report from Matt Weyrich of the Baltimore Sun indicated that Eflin has his first bullpen session scheduled for Jan. 6.

Weyrich also reported that Eflin hopes to be ready for Opening Day.

Although Baltimore's rumored interest in acquiring pitching has persisted, having Eflin healthy to begin the year would ease some of the pressure on the front office.

As it stands, the Orioles have a projected rotation of Trevor Rogers, Kyle Bradish, Baz, Eflin and Dean Kremer.
