With a need to improve their starting rotation, the Baltimore Orioles traded for Shane Baz from the Tampa Bay Rays and re-signed Zach Eflin.
Albert Suarez, who made 24 starts with the O's in 2024, is also back on a minor league deal. But they are still looking for their big splash of the offseason, at least on the pitching end of things. Though it's not for a lack of trying that Baltimore is yet to land an ace this winter.
Framber Valdez and Zac Gallen remain free agents. Either pitcher could add some much-needed experience and depth to pair with Trevor Rogers. The Orioles were also reportedly eyeing one of the top arms available before he signed with the Boston Red Sox.
Orioles finished second in Suarez sweepstakes
Before the Red Sox swooped in and signed left-hander Ranger Suarez to a five-year, $130 million contract, the Orioles were one of the clubs showing significant interest in the former Philadelphia Phillies All-Star.
"The Baltimore Orioles were the runner-up in the Suarez sweepstakes, and now are in the Valdez and Gallen markets," USA Today's Bob Nightengale wrote Friday.
There are no public reports detailing the offer the Orioles made to Suarez, but their pursuit of him shows they are looking to compete in what should be a tough AL East. An offense led by first baseman Pete Alonso and shortstop Gunnar Henderson could be one of MLB's best.
