The Baltimore Orioles have landed their big fish this offseason, signing first baseman Pete Alonso to a five-year, $155 million deal, per ESPN’s Jeff Passan.

Alonso is now the second former New York Met to depart elsewhere in free agency along with Edwin Diaz. Last season, Alonso hit.272 with 38 home runs and 126 RBIs and was named to his fifth career All-Star team. He’ll now join the Orioles where he immediately becomes their best power hitting threat in the middle of the order.

The AL East now has gotten even tougher. The Toronto Blue Jays were just in the World Series, the Yankees enjoyed another strong season, and the Red Sox have already gone out and traded for starting pitcher Sonny Gray.

The Alonso contract comes with risks given his age, but it’s a risk worth taking for an Orioles team that is seriously missing a consistent power threat in the lineup.

The Orioles were also in the mix for Kyle Schwarber before he eventually re-signed with the Philadelphia Phillies, but will settle for Alonso as they look to rebound after a disappointing 2025 season.
