The Baltimore Orioles are looking to make some noise this offseason. They've done so with three of their first moves. Taylor Ward and Ryan Helsley were quality pickups, but the Pete Alonso $155 million deal was huge.

Now with a lot of money invested in one player, it would be no surprise if the Orioles backed out of the top free agent markets. However, that's not going to be the case.

According to MLB Network insider Jon Morosi, the Orioles, even after signing Alonso to a $155 million deal, are pursuing the top free agent starting pitchers this offseason.

Orioles plan to continue spending after $155 million Pete Alonso move

"Even after agreeing to terms with Pete Alonso," Morosi reports, "sources say the Orioles remain engaged with the top end of he starting pitching market. The Orioles have had talks with free agent LHP Framber Valdez."

Baltimore is clearly looking to bolster their rotation this offseason, but after signing Alonso, it was more likely to come by way of a trade rather than a free agent deal.

But, Morosi's report indicates that not only are the Orioles still in the market for top pitching talent in free agency, they're also showing an interest - to the point of having talks - with Framber Valdez.

He's the best pitcher remaining on the market, and while his 3.66 ERA season in 2025 was a step down from his usual production, Valdez is the most consistent and reliable starter available in free agency right now.

It wouldn't be strange for the Orioles to back out of contract talks with the top pitchers after spending so much on Alonso. But, this report is a clear indication they're planning to do otherwise, and be among the biggest spenders this winter.
