The Baltimore Orioles have already made one significant move this offseason, trading often-injured starting pitcher Grayson Rodriguez to the Los Angeles Angels for power-hitting outfielder Taylor Ward.
The Orioles took a risk with that move, seeking an immediate offensive improvement despite Rodriguez not becoming a free agent until after the 2029 season. Ward hits free agency after 2026.
Baltimore must address their rotation after a disappointing showing that saw it miss last year's postseason. The Athletic's Andy McCullough suggests Zac Gallen, who posted a 4.83 ERA in 33 starts last season with the Arizona Diamondbacks, is a good fit.
"After finishing fifth in the National League Cy Young voting in 2022 and third in 2023, Gallen declined as he approached his 30s. His 4.83 ERA in 2025 might scare off some clubs," wrote McCullough. "But the Orioles could use some stability in the rotation, especially after dealing away Grayson Rodriguez. Gallen has averaged more than 180 innings per season since 2022. His homer rate might stabilize if he leaves the National League West."
How Gallen can help O's
Gallen was a popular name in trade discussions at the deadline, ultimately remaining with the Diamondbacks.
Despite a propensity to give up homers, he finished fifth in the National League Cy Young voting just two years ago. Gallen's breaking ball command, something he struggled with last year, is one of the keys to his success.
Adding Gallen to a rotation that features Trevor Rogers and a healthy Kyle Bradish could be a promising top three. A bounce-back year from the 30-year-old may have the Orioles back in playoff contention as early as next year.
