The Baltimore Orioles have made the biggest splash of the offseason so far, signing Pete Alonso to a five-year, $155 million deal. It’s definitely proof that the O’s aren’t ready to return to mediocrity.
Former Orioles minor leaguer Zach Moore of Pigtown Sports hopes so as well, as he predicted the O’s would sign Alonso, and was within $5 million of the real contract. Moore also urged Baltimore to pursue two more All-Stars, in Kyle Tucker and Ranger Suarez.
“If you want to be aggressive…5-160 for Pete Alonso, 5-225 for Kyle Tucker, 4-140 for Ranger Suarez. That’s 112 mil, 220 mil total after current contracts Stays under the Luxury tax line. Gives you money for bullpen as well. Trade for another starter,” Moore posted.
The Tucker prediction is a little far-fetched, as he has been drawing much bigger predictions for his future contract. Spotrac has him getting at least 10-years, $400 million, so it depends on what he wants: A shorter contract with a little extra AAV, or a contract that guarantees him a decade in one place. More likely, the latter option will happen.
However, for Suarez, this is a pretty possible one. He’s projected to get a six-year, $161 million contract, so a four-year, $140 million might be attractive as well. If the O’s ditch the idea of Tucker and give Suarez his projected contract, that could give them some serious depth in their starting rotation.
Hopefully, the O’s keep it up, and make this offseason legendary.
