After trading away Grayson Rodriguez, the Baltimore Orioles have a glaring need for starting pitching. Apart from Kyle Bradish and Trevor Rogers, Baltimore could use some upgrades in the rotation.
Although the Orioles have not been known to spend, it appears as though that may change this offseason. The club has already signed Ryan Helsley to a two-year $28 million contract and has been named a finalist for Pete Alonso after being in on slugger Kyle Schwarber before he ultimately chose to return to the Philadelphia Phillies.
That said, Baltimore has more of a reputation when it comes to trading. The Orioles have already acquired Taylor Ward and Andrew Kittredge via trade this offseason and have previously traded for Corbin Burnes, a former Cy Young Award winner.
According to Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon of the Athletic, the Orioles may add starting pitching via trade. The duo reported that Baltimore has had conversations with the Miami Marlins surrounding right-handed starter Edward Cabrera.
Last season with Miami, Cabrera had one of his best and most durable seasons as a major leaguer. In 26 starts he posted an 8-7 record with a 3.53 ERA and 9.8 SO/9. Cabrera's 137 2/3 innings were a career high and the first time Cabrera threw 100 innings or more in a season.
Currently under club control until 2028, Cabrera may cost a hefty package in return. That said, if Baltimore wants to compete next season and beyond, they'll need to add some pitching to supplement the bats of Gunnar Henderson, Jackson Holliday, Ward and Samuel Basallo.
