For the last few years, there was not much to cheer about when it came to the Athletics. However, things have changed this past season as the team has had some exciting pieces performing above expectations.
You cannot talk about the A's in 2025 without mentioning Nick Kurtz. Called up in April, the rookie showed that he looked like an established veteran, rather than someone in their first year.
Across 117 games, the rookie hit.290/.383/.619 with 36 home runs and 86 runs batted in. However, he was not the only rookie who stepped up. Jacob Wilson and Brent Rooker also played above expectations, helping this club win games.
Now, this team turns its attention to the future. The front office has its work cut out for itself, as they could use another pitcher, some bullpen help, and a second baseman.
Rays' two-time All-Star named likely trade candidate for Athletics
In their search for a second baseman, the A's could turn to the open market. A few intriguing names are looking for a new opportunity, like Willi Castro and Jorge Polanco, but that might not be where they turn to.
According to The Athletic's Will Sammon and Ken Rosenthal, they believe a trade with the Tampa Bay Rays to acquire Brandon Lowe is something that could be accomplished.
"In need of a second baseman, they are not considering [Bo] Bichette or Ketel Marte. A deal for someone like Tampa Bay's Brandon Lowe or the New York Mets' Jeff McNeil is perhaps more likely."
Lowe would be an immediate upgrade to what the club currently has, especially offensively. He is coming off a season where he hit 31 home runs, which would play well at the hitter-friendly field that is Sutter Health Park.
Outside of Lowe, the team could also see what it would take to acquire Jeff McNeil. However, both players do come with a health risk, as both are no strangers to heading to the IL.
