One of Texas's high school football's most dominant programs is elevating its competition field next fall. Aledo High School will move up to Class 6A for the 2026-27 UIL realignment, the University Interscholastic League announced Wednesday.

The new reclassification will end Aledo's long run in Class 5A, where the Bearcats have captured a state-record 12 football championships, including back-to-back titles in 2023 and 2024.

Aledo High School set to join UIL Class 6A.

UIL cutoff numbers show that schools with enrollments above 2,225 students are placed in Class 6A. Aledo’s reported enrollment of 2,298 pushes the Frisco ISD powerhouse into the state’s largest classification for the first time.

The move sets up potential district matchups with nearby schools such as Weatherford, Boswell, and Keller Timber Creek. Aledo’s shift also mirrors the district’s population growth, fueled by new housing developments west of Fort Worth.

Aledo’s football program has dominated across multiple classifications—winning state titles in 4A Division II, 5A Division II, and 5A Division I since 2009. District alignments for the 2026 football season will be finalized in February when the UIL releases its official realignment maps.
