National Week 17 high school football composite rankings: IMG Academy No. 1 again after Grayson's loss to Carrollton

The No. 1 Grayson [Loganville, GA] Rams had climbed all the way into the No. 1 position after weeks of tracking down last week's No. 2 IMG Academy [Bradenton, FL] Ascenders  in AllSportsPeople Composite Rankings.

Then they lasted just one week at the top.

The Rams were blown out, 34-14, by last week's No. 13/SN No. 10 Carrollton [GA] Trojans Friday night, opening the door up for IMG to reclaim the top position. Also helping IMG's case was the fact that the No. 3/SN No. 3 Centennial [Corona, CA] Huskies also lost in a 42-7 meltdown at the Rose Bowl against the No. 9/SN No. 25 Santa Margarita [Rancho Santa Margarita, CA] Eagles that same night.

So, for now, IMG, which wrapped up its season more than a month ago on November 1 after canceling its final game against the current No. 3/SN No. 3 St. Frances Academy [Baltimore, MD] Panthers, continues to hold onto the top position in the composite rankings. But while IMG Academy was backing out of games, St. Frances Academy was continuing to look for other opportunities, and the Panthers found it in the current No. 25 Corner Canyon [Draper, UT] Chargers – Utah's reigning UHSAA Class 6A state champions. That game will be played on December 10, and a win there would give St. Frances Academy momentum to possibly move ahead of IMG Academy as well.

Ditto for the No. 2/SN No. 2 Buford [GA] Wolves who can claim the top spot in AllSportsPeople High School Football Top 25 next week with a win over the Valdosta [GA] Wildcats this Friday night. IMG's grip on the top spot here in the composite index remains precarious, and they'll also have to hold off the frontrunners in Texas, including the No. 4/SN No. 4 Southlake [TX] Carroll Dragons and the No. 10/SN No. 6 Allen [TX] Eagles, in the weeks to come as well.

Several other tiebreakers used to determine final order this week

There was only one tie to break in the Top 25 of the SN Composite Rankings this week.

The North Crowley [Fort Worth, TX] Panthers and the Northwestern [Miami, FL] Bulls each accumulated 37 points in the rankings this week. The tie was broken in North Crowley's favor by virtue of the fact that the Panthers are listed in the Top 25 by five of the eight selectors (including AllSportsPeople) while Northwestern is currently only ranked in four of the lists. That gave North Crowley the No. 22 position in the composite rankings while Northwestern settled in at No. 23.

National Week 17 high school football composite rankings

Every week, we compile the rankings from eight different national selectors to create an all-in-one composite list of the teams in the order of most points accumulated.

The main reason? There is no consensus! For example, there are currently – count 'em – seven teams (Bixby, Buford, Carrollton, IMG Academy, St. Francis Academy, St. Thomas Aquinas, and Southlake Carroll) holding down the No. 1 position in at least one of the various rankings that make up AllSportsPeople Composite Rankings. IMG is the only team with two No. 1 votes with those coming from ESPN and here at AllSportsPeople.

A first place vote is worth 25 points, second place worth 24 points, third place worth 23 points... And so forth through 25th place which nets one point. With eight polls in use, a consensus top-ranked team receives up to 200 points. When possible, ties are resolved in order of the team ranked by the most selectors followed by the team receiving the highest ranking from any one or more selectors; if they are still tied, then we will try to resolve the tie by the team receiving the lowest ranking from any one or more selectors. If it is still tied, we will note it as a (tie) in parentheses.
