ROME, Georgia, Dec. 11 — The SN NEXT No. 8 Gaineville [GA] Red Elephants defeated the Rome [GA] Wolves, 37-6, Thursday night in one of Georgia's two GHSA Class 5A state semifinal matchups.
The Red Elephants now advance to Georgia's Class 5A championship next week against the winner of the Roswell [GA] Hornets and the Thomas County Central [Thomasville, GA] Yellow Jackets.
All three of Rome's losses came at home this season to teams that will play in state championship games. If Gainesville wins the 5A title and the Carrollton [GA] Trojans and Creekside [Fairburn, GA] Seminoles win Georgia's Class 6A and 4A titles, respectively, then Rome's three defeats could all be to the state champions in each of the Peach State's three highest classifications.
Gainesville improves to 12-2 with the win while Rome's season concludes at 11-3.

End of the fourth quarter: Gainesville 37, Rome 6
__________
GAINESVILLE 37, ROME 6
Rome adds a field goal, but that won't make a difference on a night like this.
__________
End of third quarter: Gainesville 37, Rome 3
It's just been Gainesville's night, and the margin here is the most surprising thing about this game.
__________
GAINESVILLE 37, ROME 3
Well, any chance of Rome rallying to win this game is gone even with nearly 15 minutes to play. Dwight Lewis breaks free for a long touchdown run, and he's got 17 carries for 211 yards and 3 touchdowns tonight.
Congratulations @goredelephants on dominant 37-6 win over Rome in @OfficialGHSA 5A State Semifinal on @GPBsports Football Thursday in Georgia. Gainesville rolls into next Wednesday's State Championship Game on GPB for second state finals appearance in 4 seasons under Coach… https://t.co/d1fH2KMOhR

__________
GAINESVILLE 30, ROME 3
And there's the problem with Rome having to settle for a field goal. Gainesville answers with a touchdown, and even with Rome's first points, they trail by their biggest margin, yet.
__________
GAINESVILLE 24, ROME 3
Rome gets on the board with a field goal. It may not sound like much, but getting into the scoring column any way possible was important. Now they need some stops.

The third quarter is under way!
__________
End of the second quarter: Gainesville 24, Rome 0
Well, as we noted earlier, this is a bit surprising. Not necessarily that Gainesville would leading, but 24-0, is a way bigger margin than expected tonight. It's still within reach, but Rome has to figure out something offense really quick.
__________
GAINESVILLE 24, ROME 0
Gainesville tacks on a field goal. Rome has to come up with an answer quick. It's possible they're already in a hole too deep to climb out of, but if they're going to have a chance, they can't let this get any worse.
__________
GAINESVILLE 21, ROME 0
It's all Gainesville so far in Rome. This is a little more one-sided than expected.

End of first quarter: Gainesville 14, Rome 0
