While Elizabeth Taylor was not a "showgirl" per se, the late Hollywood icon embodies everything that a showgirl is. The bright lights, the glamour, the scandals... All reminiscent of a life Taylor Swift, too, knows all too well. It's understandable that Swift would make not only a mention of the legendary actress but name a song after her on the singer's latest release, The Life of a Showgirl.
In the song "Elizabeth Taylor," Swift sings about how her life remains in the spotlight, and she wants someone to be a constant for her.
" Been number one but I never had two/And I can't have fun if I can't have.../Be my NY when Hollywood hates me," she sings on the second track of the album before delivering her viral line, "You're only as hot as your last hit, baby."
Elsewhere in the song, she alludes to previous relationships -- she is now engaged to Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce -- about how they seem not to handle her fame.
"All the right guys/Promised they'd stay/Under bright lights/They withered away/But you bloom," Swift sings.
The 14-time Grammy winner also asks on the track, "Hey, what could you possibly get for the girl who has everything and nothing all at once?"
Repeatedly through the song, Swift namedrops Elizabeth Taylor, "I'd cry my eyes violet/Elizabeth Taylor," and "Elizabeth Taylor/Do you think it's forever? If I can't have you."
What does Elizabeth Taylor's son think of Taylor Swift's song about his late mother?
Elizabeth has had her fair share of relationships in the spotlight -- eight marriages to be exact -- and the actress's son, Christopher Wilding, shared that his mother and Swift also share a lot of similarities outside of their lives being in the spotlight.
“She and my mom do seem like kindred spirits. They are both the very embodiment of female empowerment," he tells PEOPLE. "The way [Swift] has deftly captured the similarities and parallel tracks in their careers and personal lives is delightful."
Outside of Elizabeth Taylor's notable roles in Hollywood, her violet eyes, and a constant interest in her personal life by the media, she was someone who used her platform to care for others. A foundation that her son shared with the outlet that continues to give back to the marginalised community is her Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation.
“Her life has been lived and her time in the spotlight is now over, but I hope that who my mother was as a person and the fearless life she led will continue to inspire generations to come,” he said of his late mother.
Wilding compared Swift's care for others to that of Elizabeth Taylor's.
“Even as I believe my mother was for hers, Taylor Swift is an inspirational role model for her generation," he says. "Her advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights as well as her philanthropic work would have garnered her great admiration from my mother had they had a chance to get to know one another.”
Elizabeth Taylor died in 2011 from congestive heart failure, but her legacy remains on as it will be told in Elizabeth Taylor: Rebel Superstar, out now on Fox Nation and streaming on The Roku Channel and Apple TV+. The Life of a Showgirl is out now on all streaming platforms.
