Coco Gauff prefers to serve on the court au natural.
The 2025 French Open champion shared with Vogue that while she appreciates the style icons of women before her on the court like Serena and Venus Williams, Gauff prefers to just have a bare face while she's playing.
“I just sweat too much and, like, makeup would be all over,” she explained. “I know the WNBA girlies kill it down with the beats. If I could wear makeup, I would.”
“In tennis, if you wanna wear makeup, you can wear makeup,” Gauff, said. “I know Serena [Williams] has worn eyeliner. I think Venus [Williams] still does the eyeliner. You can wear a full beat if you want to.”
While the tennis star, who is currently competing at the 2025 U.S. Open, shares that she doesn't like to wear makeup while playing, she makes up for it with cute nail designs and daring outfits.
“I do have a cute outfit to take away the attention from my face,” she told the outlet. “I plan my outfits for tournaments well in advance because I like to know what I’m wearing [and I will get] my nails done.”
“[My nails] will be something different to match the outfit for that,” she continued. “Then, also my hair. I just got my hair down, and I know when all three things are done, which is very rare, but for grand slams I try to make sure that all three are done [and then] I feel the best on court.”
When Gauff puts the racket down, she usually turns on YouTube or scrolls on TikTok to some of her favorite beauty influencers.
“Jackie Aina, Alissa Ashley, Monet McMichael, all of them have basically taught me how to do my makeup — especially being a young Black girl,” she said, calling out some favorite beauty influencers. “Like, long time ago, I didn’t know what to do. I didn’t know how to color-match my skin [and] that we had to do things a little bit differently. They taught me a lot when it comes to that.”
Gauff next plays in the fourth round on Monday, Sept. 1. She will be playing against the 15th-seeded Daria Kasatkina of Australia or the 23rd-seeded Naomi Osaka of Japan.
"It's been an emotional week ... but I think I needed those tough moments to move forward and I was putting so much pressure on myself," the 21-year-old said in her post-match interview. "But I'm really out here just trying to enjoy it and not focus so much on results, but the process, and I think today it showed I was really having fun out there."
