Michael Porter Jr. is taking on a relationship controversy...splitting rent.

Almost every other month on social media, the topic comes up on the TL on whether couples should split rent or if one person should fork over the monthly bill. The Brooklyn Nets star is putting his hat into the ring with a personal story about whether he would split rent with a girlfriend and wanting to know that the woman is with him because she actually likes him not because of his money.

"It's very hard when you have money to tell a woman's intentions," Porter Jr. explained. "I had never bought a girl expensive gifts before this last girl. And it was cool to do… but I still wanted to know that she was with me for the right reasons. Every dude in this particular person's past had money. So I never wanted to feel like a girl was just with me because of what I have."

Porter Jr. was a guest on  Respectfully The Justin Laboy Show where he shared how the bills went with his ex-girlfriend. When it came to apartment-hunting his ex-girlfriend found a place that she loved but couldn't afford it and he offered to help her out regardless if their relationship ended before the lease.

"This is really nice. I want you to be able to stay here… what can you afford and I'll split it. I'll pay the rest," Porter recalled before sharing that he wouldn't live with a woman unless he was married.

Unfortunately for Porter Jr. and the ex, their relationship only lasted five months before they went their separate ways, which confused him on whether he should still be helping her out.

"I'm like, man, do I keep helping her out or is it cooked?" he said.

"At the end of the day, a man is supposed to provide for a woman," he continued. "But I still want to know she's in this for the right reasons."

Porter Jr. has a five-year contract for up to $207 million with the Nets after he was traded from the Denver Nuggets in June.
