Allen Iverson is getting vulnerable about his personal life.
In an interview with Stephen A. Smith, the NBA Hall of Famer shared that he is now sober, which led to a reunion with his wife, Tawanna.
"It was self-inflicted, but when Tawanna divorced me, that's when I knew I hit my lowest point and it was time for some deep, self-re-evaluation," Iverson told Smith on First Take. 'You know what I mean? [She is] my number one. Obviously we've been together over, well, 35 years. If you hang in there that long, it takes a lot to want to go."
Tawanna and the NBA legend are high school sweethearts, and after 12 years of marriage, she decided to file for divorce. Prior to the divorce, Iverson shared that he had gotten to a low point when he saw their names on court documents related to the dissolution of their marriage.
"I had tried everything, nothing was working," said Iverson. "And when I'm sitting in that courtroom, and I usually watch Sixers. vs. Sixers in the scrimmage or Georgetown vs. Georgetown, and I'm sitting there and them tears hit the page and I saw Iverson vs. Iverson. I was like oh man, this is the lowest it gets right here."
While they are no longer married, Iverson shared that they were able to get back together because he was able to overcome his alcohol abuse.
"I had to change a lot of things," Iverson said, noting that Tawanna had prayed he would stop drinking after promising her.
"I had to convince her that basically this wasn't the same old me," he added. "I expressed to her what she means to me in my life and how pivotal that she is in my growth and my maturation and where I want to go in life. I don't feel like I'm the same Allen Iverson without her, you know what I mean? She is my life."
This revelation follows his interview with CBS Evening's Maurice DuBois about his sobriety journey earlier this week. He shared how grateful he is to be on this path.
"When you get drunk, you're not how you usually are," Iverson said. "The more and more I see it on other people, the more and more it makes me happy about the decision. And the more and more I see how the people around me appreciate it, I love it."
Iverson released his memoir, Misunderstood, on Oct. 7, which details his childhood, tumultuous life off the court, and how he changed the league.
Misunderstood is out now.
