Notre Dame head coach Micah Shrewsberry reprimanded for in-game explosion

The Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) has publicly reprimanded Micah Shrewsberry after an on-court incident at the end of Notre Dame’s one-point loss to California on Friday night.

According to ESPN, Notre Dame entered the final possession protecting a three-point advantage, but a foul was whistled on Logan Imes as Cal guard Dai Dai Ames released a shot from beyond the arc. The basket counted, and Ames converted the free throw to complete a four-point play, swinging the lead to California. The Golden Bears held on for a 72–71 victory over the Fighting Irish.

As the final horn sounded, Shrewsberry sprinted toward official Adam Flore in visible frustration. Players and staff intervened, physically restraining the Notre Dame head coach before he could reach the officiating crew. Shrewsberry did not address reporters following the game.

In a statement released Saturday, the ACC cited a violation of its sportsmanship policy and confirmed the matter would not move forward beyond the reprimand.

“Shrewsberry aggressively confronted a member of the officiating crew following the game,” the conference said. “The unsportsmanlike behavior that was displayed is unacceptable and tarnishes the on-court play between these institutions. The ACC considers this matter closed and will have no further comment.”

Not long before the league’s announcement, Shrewsberry issued his own apology, acknowledging that his actions crossed a line and did not align with the expectations of his program or the university.

“My actions were inappropriate and not symbolic of the leader I strive to be and what Notre Dame expects of its coaches and educators,” Shrewsberry said. “I will learn from this lack of judgment and be better in the future. I want to apologize to our team, our University and its leaders, to Coach Madsen and his team, and to the ACC, as my actions were unacceptable.”

The loss dropped the Notre Dame Fighting Irish to 10–5 overall and 1–1 in Atlantic Coast Conference play. California, meanwhile, improved to 13–2 and evened its conference record at 1–1, giving the California Golden Bear an early-season résumé win as league play ramps up.
