Mel Owens apologizes for controversial age comments
Shortly after Owens was named the next season's bachelor, he got some backlash for his comments regarding not wanting to date women over 60. A close friend of his who also happens to be a fan of Bachelor Nation told him that he went viral and what his next course of action.
“What you said was insensitive, and it’s just not who you are,” Owens told Glamour what his friend told him.
The former Los Angeles Rams star blamed his hiatus from dating for so long since his divorce from Fabiana Owens, whom he married in 2002.
"My reference of dating was 39, 40 years old. I hadn’t dated in 26, 27 years. That’s what I told her. She goes, “It doesn’t matter. You’ve said some things that are just incredibly wrong.” And I go, “I’ve got to apologize.”
Before the first taping, he shared how he apologized for his past comments.
"I apologized to the women on the show. When I first walked in, I addressed it. I apologized to them," he continued. "I said, 'It was unfair, insensitive. I want to earn it back. Just give me the chance.' And hopefully, these last two weeks I earned some of that back."
How Mel Owens is different from the first Golden Bachelor
The first season of The Golden Bachelor aired in 2023 with Gerry Turner. He ended up proposing to and marrying Theresa Nist, but announced they would be getting a divorce three months after their marriage.
“He’s a great choice because he isn’t Gerry 2.0,” Golden Bachelor showrunner Jess Castro says. “The experiences that have led him to this part of his life are very different than from what Gerry’s are. In season 1, there was a lot of conversation around loss. But that's not the only thing that happens to you later in life. In season 2, we are going to see what happens after divorce. We are going to go on a completely different journey with Mel than we were with Gerry.”
The Golden Bachelor season 2 premieres on Wednesday, Sept. 24 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
