Michigan and Notre Dame opened the 2025 soccer season with a 1-1 draw in Ann Arbor. Now one of them will see their season end on the same pitch.
The Wolverines (12-3-4) had hoped for a top 16 seed and the first-round bye that comes with it after holding a top-10 ranking late in the season, but a scoreless draw at Penn State to close the regular season and an ugly 5-0 loss to UCLA in the Big Ten tournament championship game landed Michigan in the opening round.
The Irish, meanwhile, squeezed into the tournament at 8-6-4 despite losing four of their last five before the brackets were unveiled. They'll have to regain their form from earlier in the fall to keep their season alive.
The last time these teams met NCAA play, in 2018, they went scoreless through regulation and two overtimes before the Irish finally prevailed 11-10 on penalties.
