Shedeur Sanders' NFL debut could hardly have gone worse.

The Cleveland Browns' rookie QB went 4-for-16 with an interception and two sacks taken.

Admittedly, it was a tough spot. Sanders had to come in as the reliever for Dillon Gabriel, who left the game with a concussion.

Sanders also had a couple players where his receivers could've caught what were decent passes but didn't hold on.

Still, it was quite rough.

It at least raises the idea of what kind of NFL future Sanders has. And that discussion leads to the fact that Sanders has an alternative.

The Canadian Football League's Toronto Argonauts hold Sanders' negotiating rights. That means if Sanders wants to play in the CFL, Toronto would get the first crack at offering him a contract.

Over the summer, ESPN's Bill Barnwell suggested that a trip to Canada might actually be a good thing in Sanders' development, potentially giving him an opportunity to play a lot at a professional level.

There's no indication that Sanders would consider playing for the Argonauts.

But some players get to make their own career decisions, and some have aspects of their career decided for them.

If Sanders doesn't show improvement, his NFL future may not be particularly long lasting. And then at that point, if he wanted to keep playing QB, he'd have a home up north.
