Anthony Joshua car crash updates: Latest news on British heavyweight boxer injured in fatal accident image

British heavyweight boxer Anthony Joshua has suffered minor injuries in a car crash in Nigeria that left two people dead.

The crash took place on the Ogun-Lagos state expressway. In a statement released to the BBC, Ogun State Police Command confirmed two people had died and Joshua and others had been taken to a hospital at an undisclosed location.

Police also confirmed Joshua had suffered "minor injuries" but is "fine".

According to local media reports, Joshua was in the back seat of a vehicle when it collided with a stationary truck. 

Footage posted to social media showed the 36-year-old grimacing as he was helped from the car.

Joshua was spending time in Nigeria after his sixth-round knockout win over YouTuber Jake Paul in Miami on December 19.

Joshua's promoter Eddie Hearn told Daily Mail Sport: "We are trying to contact Anthony and in the meantime we don't want to speculate on how he is but thankfully he appears okay from what I have seen in the images. We are awaiting more information on what has happened and will update in due course." 

The Federal Road Safety Corps in Nigeria later confirmed five men were involved in the crash, two of whom died. The other s"escaped unhurt.

The road saftety officials also stated that a Lexus Jeep involved in the crash was suspected to be travelling "beyond the legally prescribed speed limit" and lost control while attempting an overtaking manoeuvre. This was presumed to be the reason for the collision with the stationary truck.

Where is Anthony Joshua from?

Joshua was born in Watford, England, to parents of Nigerian descent.

As an 11-year-old, he spent six months at the Mayflower boarding school in Ikenne, Ogun State.

His family has roots in the Ogun State town of Sagamu.

Joshua has been a regular visitor to Nigeria on vacation throughout his top-level professional career and has the outline of Nigeria tattooed on his right shoulder.

Joshua does not yet have a date confirmed for his next fight. Before the Paul fight, Hearn discussed the intention for his fighter to box in February or March 2026.

Former kickboxing world champion Rico Verboeven has been touted as a possible opponent.

At this stage, it is unclear whether the injuries Joshua sustained during the car accident will force a change to his fighting plans.

It is hoped that a long-awaited showdown between Joshua and fellow former two-time world heavyweight champion Tyson Fury can be made in the second half of 2026.
