What are player props in women’s college basketball?

Player props are wagers involving the performance of a specific athlete as opposed to a full team or game. They have become one of the most popular forms of prop betting, typically presented as over/under bets or yes/no proposition on specific statistical milestones.

Player props usually involve a players' projections in the major stat categories like points, rebounds and assists. Sometimes, they are combined (PRA, double-doubles, etc.).

How player props work in college basketball vs. The NBA

Multiple major differences exist between college basketball player prop betting and NBA player prop betting. Here are some key contrasts:

  • Differences in data availability: The NBA has a vastly larger wealth of statistical data compared to NCAA, with many pros in the league for a long time. This makes NBA player prop betting a more robust and predictable market than college hoops.
  • State restrictions: While NBA player prop betting is basically legal in most states that allow sports betting, multiple states ban prop betting on collegiate athletes. Even in states that allow NCAA player prop betting, selections and offerings tend to be vastly more limited than professional sports league player props.
  • Scoring pace: NBA games are faster-paced than college games due to a shorter 24-second shot clock versus college's 30 seconds, and the NBA's 48-minute game length versus college's 40 minutes. The NBA also maintains a rule against defensive three seconds, which limits zone defenses. Coaching and playbooks are also generally more sophisticated and prone to faster-paced styles in the pros.
  • Lineup variability: Depth charts in the NBA are generally more well-known and set in stone, while college basketball lineups and rotations can be a lot more fluid. This can make individual stat projections much easier in NBA prop betting.

Key stats that matter for player prop betting

Here are some stats that serve as reliable predictive metrics in college basketball prop betting, all of which you should get to know if you want to be successful in your player prop journey.

  • Usage rate: How much or how little a player is involved in their offense. This can be a strong indicator of scoring and assists, helping bettors to project such counting stats.
  • Minutes played: The amount of time a player sees the floor helps us to understand their potential impact, especially when also viewing that player's field-goal percentage, offensive rating and points per 36 minutes.
  • Rebounding percentage: A more accurate indication of a player's rebounding ability than rebounds per game. If a player has a strong rebounding rate and has an opportunity for increased minutes soon, their rebounding over might be a solid value bet.
  • Assist rate: Like rebounding percentage, assist rate tells us how strong of a passer is and what percentage of the time they record an assist while on the floor.
  • Opponent tempo: It's also important to weigh out opponent tempo and defense when considering player props. To accurately project a player's stats, we must first know what they're going up against and how other similar players have played against the same defense.

How to find value in women’s college basketball props

There are a number of different strategies for finding value in women's college basketball player props. Here are the most important ones:

  • Compare odds by line-shopping across sportsbooks: Find the best value for a player, whether it be shorted over/under projections or longer, more profitable odds.
  • Conduct thorough research: Look beyond the traditional stats and averages and dive deeper into advanced stats and metrics. Turn betting into a science and start thinking like an oddsmaker.
  • Anticipate odds and lines: When you start making projections yourself, you start understanding how to pinpoint value on the odds boards. Monitor recent stats, trends and metrics that give you an edge against the sportsbook.
  • Analyze head-to-head matchups: Does a certain player have an edge or advantage in a particular matchup? How has that player fared against their scheduled opponent and/or primary defender in the past?
  • Evaluate split stats and key factors: Look at home vs. Away splits, rest vs. No rest and more. View the injury report for the specific game to project usage rate and opponent strength. Little details matter!
  • Spot inefficiencies through good timing: By knowing and staying on top of all of the above, you'll be able to spot inefficiencies or potentially-mispriced odds before the markets adjust. Check odds early and often to stay one step ahead of the oddsmakers.

Common mistakes bettors make with college women's basketball player props

Here are some mistakes to avoid as you embark upon your journey into women's basketball player prop betting:

  • Overvaluing star names: Big names often translate to big projections. Don't get lured into betting an inflated over if the value's not there. Casuals lose money on superstar props every day.
  • Ignoring blowout risk: Don't get burned by garbage time! If a game could potentially be a blowout, an over might be a volatile bet as the star players might not see as much usage and/or playing time.
  • Betting overs blindly without accounting for game tempo: Know how the player and both teams play before locking in bets. Your wagers should reflect the game script and narrative you expect to see play out.
  • Relying too much on averages: Don't rely too much on per-game stats — advanced data will help you find an edge, not the same basic, traditional stats every casual looks at before betting. Go the extra mile.
  • Playing too many parlays: Parlays are the sportsbooks' best friend! They have a low success rate for bettors and thus yield high profit rates for books. Adding too many legs into props may seem like a more profitable route, but they're actually quite difficult to turn into profit. Think of it this way: parlays are like playing the lottery or guessing a pin code.
