The last time is now.

John Cena's historic career comes to a close on Saturday, Dec. 13 at "Saturday Night's Main Event." The theme of the night is showcasing the youth in the WWE with a four-match card that pits main roster wrestlers against up and coming stars from NXT. The lone outlier there is John Cena, who will face Gunther in the final match of his career.

A tournament was held on Raw and SmackDown to determine Cena's final opponent. Gunther is riding a four-match win streak, taking down Je'Von Evans, Carmelo Hayes Solo Sikoa and LA Knight on his way to winning the tournament and earning the right to face Cena in his final match. Adding some intrigue to the outcome of the match, Gunther also defeated WWE Hall of Famer Goldberg in his final match, which took place on the July 12, 2025 edition of "Saturday Night's Main Event" earlier this year.

The other matches on the card include Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes taking on NXT Champion Oba Femi, Bayley vs. Sol Ruca and what is sure to be a high-flying tag team match between World Tag Team champions AJ Styles and Dragon Lee and Je'Von Evans and Leon Slater.

John Cena vs. Gunther

This section will be updated when the match begins.

Cody Rhodes vs. Oba Femi

Despite reports that Cena and Gunther could open the show, it was actually Rhodes vs. Femi.

The two exchanged holds early, establishing that it was an even matchup. Rhodes went for his drop-down punch, but Femi pinned him to the ground and then lifted him into an enormous backbreaker.

Femi continued targeting Rhodes' back. Rhodes finally started to turn the tables, hitting his famous Cody Cutter, but it only got him a two-count. It looked like the action was going to spill to the outside, but Femi clocked Rhodes with a stiff right hand, stopping his would-be outside dive.

Rhodes went for another dive to the outside, but Femi had recovered and turned it into a powerful spinebuster for a count of two.

The action goes back to the outside, and Femi hit a spinning elbow on Rhodes that knocked them both over the announce table and cut Rhodes' ear.

Rhodes recovered and sprang from either side of the turnbuckle to hit an Avalanche Cody Cutter. After a two-count, Drew McIntyre hit Rhodes to draw the DQ finish.

Afterwards, Femi shoved McIntyre down. Rhodes hit a Cody Cutter to McIntyre before Femi chokeslammed him in the middle of the ring. While fans clammored for the wrestlers to keep going, Rhodes tossed Femi his title belt and raised his hand. After Rhodes turned to leave, Femi pulled him back and raised his arm in return. The two shook hands, and the match and its fallout ended.

Winner: Oba Femi via DQ

WWE Saturday Night's Main Event card details

John Cena vs. Gunther:  This is the match of the night, but reports suggest that it could actually kickoff the show. This aligns with Cena's desire not to make this about him and make the night about putting over other talent. Still, there is assuredly going to be a huge celebration for Cena when his match ends, regardless of the result.

Many fans don't like how we got to this match and had other opponents that they wanted to see be Cena's final match. Gunther doesn't necessarily need the torch passed to him, but this should be a great match for Cena to go out on. Cena is likely to lose this match, with fans just hoping that after all this time that the "Never Seen, Seventeen" doesn't tap out in his final contest. Gunther, meanwhile, is hoping to end a legend's career for the second time this year, as he also defeated Goldberg in his retirement match over the summer.

Cody Rhodes vs. Oba Femi:  Femi was a popular pick to take on Cena, but he wasn't the mystery opponent in the tournament for Cena's opponent. That honor went to Dolph Ziggler, who lost in the first round.

Femi returned on Nov. 11 and took back his NXT Championship from Ricky Saints on Dec. 6. The winner of their championship match not only earned gold but also the opportunity to face Rhodes at "Saturday Night's Main Event." Many have been calling for Femi to make the jump to the main roster, and this match will be a good chance to show that he is ready.

AJ Styles and Dragon Lee vs. Je’Von Evans and Leon Slater:  This match is just going to be fun. If you haven't watched Evans or Slater in the ring yet, you are going to be treated to the future of the business. Their charisma is addictive, and they pull off some crazy high-flying moves with excellent creativity.

Styles and Lee could be the main roster representatives to lose on the card so that NXT isn't fully squashed, and if that is the case, Evans and Slater are going to make sure it is a believable outcome with their talents.

Bayley vs. Sol Ruca:  Sol Ruca could be another NXT member who comes away with a win from "Saturday Night's Main Event." Bayley is similar to Cena in that she consistently puts over other wrestlers and helps them have great matches to get over with a crowd that may not be familiar with their NXT work.

This match feels like it is going to be a good one throughout, with Sol Ruca hitting her viral Sol Snatcher finisher and picking up a win.
