Jannik Sinner continued the quest to defend his US Open title after beating fellow Italian, Lorenzo Musetti, under the lights at Arthur Ashe Stadium on Wednesday night (September 3).

The 24-year-old's 6-1 6-4 6-2 victory over his compatriot means he has progressed to the semi-final stage of every Grand Slam event in 2025.

Across the five games the world no. 1 has played at Flushing Meadows this year, four have been straight-sets victories.

Sinner nailed 10 aces in his latest outing and was ruthless when necessary as he converted five out of six break points and saved all seven against him.

The top seed wasted no time in getting off the mark in the quarter-final contest as he landed breaks in Musetti's first two service games before taking the opening set in under half and hour.

Musetti was able to put up a better fight in the final two sets, but he never capitalised on opportunities to land a significant blow.

This was the story for the 10th seed in the second game of the final set, as he squandered four break points, preventing him from breaking back after losing serve in the opening game.

Musetti seemingly lost all belief from that moment on as Sinner soon raced to victory.

Sinner moves on to the semi-finals

After taking care of business in New York, Sinner reacted to reaching the semi-final of a Grand Slam for the eighth time in his last ten appearances at majors.

"These are very special occasions and finding myself again in the semis of a grand slam, it’s a great achievement. I'm very happy," said the 24-year-old in his post-match press conference.

"We try to prepare ourselves in the best possible way to be in these positions. I love to go deep into a tournament," Sinner added.

The world's top ranked player will face Felix Auger Aliassime on Friday (September 3) for a place in the final, after the Canadian overcame Alex de Minaur in the last eight.

Sinner is looking to become the first male player to win successive US Open titles since Roger Federer won a fifth consecutive one in 2008.

The Italian is also on the hunt to win a third Grand Slam this year after taking home the Australian Open and Wimbledon titles.

Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic will face-off in Friday's other semi-final in the men's singles draw.
