Great Britain are launching another Billie Jean King Cup campaign, as the 2025 tournament takes place in China.

Along with Spain, Ukraine, USA, China, Italy, Kazakhstan and Japan, Team GB are gunning for glory in the tournament Finals, which are being held in Shenzhen from September 16-21.

How will they fare in the Far East? And how have they done in the past in the women's team tennis competition dubbed the 'World Cup of tennis'?

The Sporting News provides more information on Great Britain's history in the Billie Jean King Cup.

Have Great Britain ever won the Billie Jean King Cup?

In a word, no. Great Britain has never won the Billie Jean King Cup (or the Federation Cup or Fed Cup as the tournament was previously known). They have reached the final on four occasions — in 1967, 1971, 1972 and 1981 — but it's been a barren run ever since.

They competed in the Finals in 2022 but only qualified due to being hosts, with the event staged in Glasgow.

Billie Jean King Cup all-time winners

The USA are the most successful country in Billie Jean King Cup history with an incredible 18 titles, plus 12 more appearances in the final as runners-up.

Czechoslovakia (since known as Czech Republic and now Czechia) are second with 11 titles and then come Australia with seven.

Here's a list of finals since 1995. The competition changed its name that year to the Fed Cup and then became the Billie Jean King Cup in 2020.

Great Britain are not among the favourites to lift the Cup, but begin their campaign against Japan in the quarterfinals on September 18.

The other quarterfinals are:

  • September 16: Italy vs. China
  • September 17: Spain vs. Ukraine
  • September 18: USA vs. Kazakhstan

The four quarterfinal winners will then meet in the semifinals on September 19 and 20, with Great Britain to play the winners of the Kazakhstan versus USA match if they come through against Japan.

All ties will consist of two singles matches and one doubles match with the overall victor progressing through. All matches are played as best-of-three tie-break sets.

The Great Britain team consists of Katie Boutler, Sonay Kartal, Jodie Burrage and Francesca Jones, who has replaced former US Open champion Emma Raducanu in the line-up.
