Roger Federer is one of the greatest tennis players of all-time, but the Swiss icon has been notably absent from the court in recent months.

The 40-year-old hasn't played since July 2021 when he was knocked out of Wimbledon in straight sets.

Federer is not done yet though and vowed he will return to tennis when his body is ready to compete again.

Is Roger Federer playing at the French Open in 2022?

Federer will not be competing at the 2022 French Open as he continues to undergo rehabilitation on knee surgery he had in August last year.

Including the 2022 edition, Federer has now featured in just two of the last six French Opens.

The 20-time Grand Slam winner has previously declared he's also unlikely to play at Wimbledon this year but has kept the door open for the US Open as he pushes to complete a final comeback.

"Let’s be clear, my life is not going to fall apart if I don’t play another Grand Slam final, but that would be ultimate dream to get back there," Federer told the Tribune de Genève daily late last year.

"I want to see one last time what I’m capable of as a professional tennis player."

What is Roger Federer's French Open record?

Thanks in large part to Rafael Nadal's dominance at Roland-Garros, Federer has struggled to make his mark at the French Open during his otherwise successful career.

The Swiss star has won the Grand Slam just once in 2009, while losing four French Open finals against Nadal.

Federer has faired much better at every other Grand Slam tournament having won Wimbledon eight times, the Australian Open on six occasions and the US Open five times.

When could Roger Federer play next?

Federer is yet to formally rule himself out of the 2022 US Open, with the year's final Grand Slam set to begin on August 29.

Beyond that, it's been confirmed that Federer will team up with Nadal for the Laver Cup in September.

Both players missed the event in 2021 but are hoping to play doubles together at the tournament to be held in London.

Federer has also been registered to play at the Swiss Indoors in October having won the event 10 times previously.
