WIMBLEDON, LONDON — Coco Gauff suffered a shocking first-round defeat at Wimbledon as Dayana Yastremska caused one of the biggest upsets of the tournament.
The Ukrainian picked up one of the greatest wins of her career, defeating the French Open champion 7-6 (7-3), 6-1 to secure herself a spot in the second round for only the third time in her career.
Gauff had beaten the world No.42 convincingly on all three previous occasions but those wins all came on clay. The American was second best in every aspect of their first meeting on grass, today.
The stats weren't pretty either. A tally of nine double faults, and her six winners compared with 29 unforced errors proved costly.
Gauff's early exit was the second shock American dumping of the day as world No.2 Jessica Pegula suffered defeat to world No.116 Elisabetta Cocciaretto in just 58 minutes.

Gauff* 6-6 (3-7), 1-6 Yastremska - Yastremska wins second set and the match!
The crowd are willing the American on but that won't help her double faulting again in the opener. A backhand winning return leaves Gauff rooted, 15-30. She tries so again but this time it's wide, 30-30. Gauff then hits wide and it's match point Yastremska. Gauff is caught off guard with a fierce return to her feet and that's that! Gauff beaten by a fearless Yastremska!
Gauff 6-6 (3-7), 1-5 Yastremska*
Gauff can only wish to be serving like her opponent right now. Yastremska is so consistent and then shows great speed to make a drop shot and go 40-15 up. An ace puts her one game away from a shock victory.
Gauff* 6-6 (3-7), 1-4 Yastremska
Yastremska pauses play briefly and looks to have found Gauff's earring on her side of the court as she places it down by her chair. That''s the least of the American's worries right now though as a double fault and a Yastremska winner see her fall 15-30 behind. Another double fault gives Yastremska break points. Gauff is broken and it's not looking good for the two-time grand slam champion.
Gauff 6-6 (3-7), 1-3 Yastremska*
Far too easy for Yastremska with Gauff failing to return the serves. The last she does return but it's way beyond the baseline. Yastremska holds with an ace.
Gauff* 6-6 (3-7), 1-2 Yastremska
An ace followed by a double fault sums up her game so far. Yastremska is hitting much more consistently but Gauff lets out some emotion with a delightful backhand winner beyond the Ukrainian's reach.
Gauff 6-6 (3-7), 0-2 Yastremska*
At 30-30 Gauff hits a return into the net and looks to the floor in disappointment. The game is conceded in similar fashion with a weak forehand nowhere near clearing the net.
Gauff* 6-6 (3-7), 0-1 Yastremska
The French Open champion needs to find a new gear but Yastremska continues to pepper her with shots. More double faults won't help though and suddenly it's 15-40. Yastremska makes a mess of a volley to break her but Gauff slices into the net. Gauff's on the ropes here already.
Gauff 6-7 (3-7) Yastremska - Yastremska wins first set!
Gauff then hits a backhand too long and it draws up set points again. Gauff's on serve and after a long rally Yastremska volleys at the net, just narrowly avoiding hitting it to win the first set!
Gauff 6-6 (3-5) Yastremska
Wow, best return of the match from Yastremska as she fires a forehand return right down the line, 2-5. And then one of the points of the match as Gauff stays calm despite a net cord disrupting Yastremska's shot.
Gauff 6-6 (2-4) Yastremska
Gauff takes the next with her fierce return causing problems, 2-3 but then double faults again. What is happening?!
Gauff 6-6 (1-3) Yastremska
Yastremska takes the first point as Gauff's return is wide. Yastremska does the same to her at the next point, 1-1. Gauff double faults and then comes out on the losing side of a long rally.
Gauff* 6-6 Yastremska
Nervy times for Gauff too as she double faults the opener. She's soon back in front courtesy of Yastremska's forehands going long and wide, 40-15. Into the tie-break we go as another shot goes wide.
Gauff 5-6 Yastremska*
We're back to long rallies from deep and they both win a long rally each to start things off. Mistakes from Gauff hand Yastremska the advantage and she gets an important hold.
Gauff* 5-5 Yastremska
The crowd love that as Gauff shows her athleticism to return a difficult shot straight into Yastremska's feet. She races to 40-0 and finishes the game with an ace.
Gauff 4-5 Yastremska*
Gauff can't cope with Yastremska's power and finds herself 30-0 down. Gauff gets level by staying patient to force her opponent's mistake but then her return finds the net and it's set point. That's nerves! She double faults on set point and then overhits a forehand to turn the match in Gauff's favour. Unbelievably, she double faults again to give Gauff the break. Wow, what a let off for the world No.2.
Gauff* 3-5 Yastremska
Gauff slips on the second point but looks to be fine. She gets up to deliver two big serves taking her to 40-15, and then wins the match with a volley at the net after pulling off her first successful drop shot of the match. More variety needed from the American.
Gauff 2-5 Yastremska*
She responds by watching an ace whizz by her. Gauff then comes to the net with a sweet backhand winner as she screams out "come on!" But she can have little response as Yastremska gets to 40-15 with a shot from deep that she practically hit sat down to get the required power. The Ukrainian follows that with a double fault but then executes the tried and tested backhand winner to go 5-2 up! Gauff has no answers to that shot at the moment.
Gauff* 2-3 Yastremska
Two huge forehand winners into the corners stops Gauff in her tracks, 0-30. Gauff pulls one back but another winner to Gauff's right side brings up break point. She takes it... doing exactly the same shot with the backhand. How will Gauff respond?
Gauff 2-3 Yastremska*
Gauff is rewarded for her brilliant defensive returns to win the opening point as Yastremska hits long after a tiring rally. The energy levels are high from both players right now as Yastremska hits a lovely two-handed backhand winner across court to take the fifth game.
Gauff* 2-2 Yastremska
A barrage of big serves gets Gauff to 40-0 and she gets a comfortable hold. Not much to separate the pair right now.
Gauff 1-2 Yastremska*
No player has come to the net or played a drop shot until Yastremska opts to in the third point here, volleying a winner at close range, 30-15. Yastremska then attempts a slice but it doesn't clear the net. Back to the powerful forehands from the base line and she gets the hold.
Gauff* 1-1 Yastremska
A few early nerves from Gauff as she double faults on the second point, 0-30. Mistakes from the Ukrainian allow Gauff to level and a huge serve sees the return find the net, 40-30. Gauff is up and running as Yastremska hits a forehand beyond the baseline.
Gauff 0-1 Yastremska*
Gauff's first return goes long as Yastremska takes the opening point. A long rally with some hard-hitting groundstrokes has fans clapping already, hopefully a sign of things to come. A few overhit shots from Gauff puts Yastremska at 40-30 before Gauff fires into the net.
